What Makes Bicester's Friday Market Special — A Local's Guide

Bicester Market Square with market stalls on Sheep Street

Every Friday morning, the pedestrianised stretch of Sheep Street transforms into one of Oxfordshire’s most welcoming community markets. Running from 9am to 4:30pm, Bicester’s Friday Market brings together around 20 stalls offering everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to artisan baked goods, handmade crafts, and hot street food.

A Market With History

Bicester has been a market town since the medieval period, when the Bassett family — the Norman lords who also founded St Edburg’s Church and Bicester Priory — established the right to hold a regular market. Today’s Friday Market continues that tradition, which is detailed in our guide to Bicester’s Market Square history.

What You’ll Find

The market is known for its mix of regulars and rotating seasonal stallholders. On a typical Friday you can expect:

  • Fresh produce — fruit, vegetables, and herbs, much of it sourced from farms within Oxfordshire
  • Baked goods — breads, pastries, cakes, and biscuits from independent bakers
  • Hot food — street food stalls serving everything from hog roast rolls to freshly made crêpes, detailed in our guide to Bicester street food stalls
  • Arts and crafts — handmade jewellery, candles, cards, and gifts from local makers
  • Clothing and accessories — including locally designed items

Tips for First-Timers

Arrive early. The best produce goes quickly, especially in summer. By mid-morning the market is buzzing but the stalls are well stocked.

Bring a reusable bag. Many stallholders are happy to reduce packaging if you bring your own.

Take a coffee break. The cafés along Sheep Street — including Bicester Bean and Coffee#1 Bicester — make perfect pit stops between browsing the stalls.

When and Where

Every Friday, 9:00am – 4:30pm on Sheep Street, Bicester town centre. The weekly Friday Market event runs year-round, rain or shine.

There’s also a monthly gathering covered in our Bicester Farmers Market guide on the second Thursday of every month in Market Square, while weekend visitors can discover our guide to Saturday and specialist markets in Bicester alongside our monthly roundup of what’s on in Bicester and year-round independent food shops in Bicester.

The Friday Market isn’t just about shopping. It forms a key highlight of our wider shopping in Bicester guide and stands as one of the top free things to do in Bicester where neighbours catch up, new residents discover the town’s character, and Bicester feels like the welcoming community it has always been.
